Light micrograph of Candida albicans, found in a vaginal smear & causing thrush. It is a yeast-like fungus commonly present on the skin,& in the upper respiratory, alimentary & female genital tracts. It is normally harmless although it may become pathogenic when the body's resistance is weakened through malnutrition, general debility, diabetes & antibiotic treatment. It can then cause a number of diseases including thrush,an infection of the mouth & vagina,& vulvo- vaginitis,a white discharge from the vagina. The fungus produces hyphae (strands) which carry the blastospores (ovals 2-3 microns in diameter). Magnification: X 250 at 35mm size | |
