Fitted IUD contraceptive. Coloured ultrasound scan of the womb of a woman, showing a fitted intrauterine contraceptive device (IUD) or coil. This is a Lippes Loop type of IUD. It is visible as the looped structure (yellow) in the dark womb. An IUD is inserted through the cervix into the womb to prevent pregnancy. There are different types of IUD devices, some made of plastic, others wound with copper wire. It is thought the main effect of this foreign body in the womb is to inhibit implantation of a fertilised egg. Some IUD's contain a progestogen drug which suppresses ovulation. IUD's are not as effective as the pill | |
