Contraception. View of an intra-uterine device (IUD) which is used for contraceptive purposes. It is made of moulded plastic with a copper wire wrapped around the stem and a string at its end; it is inserted into the uterus through the vaginal canal and cervix by a doctor or a gynaecologist. Although it is not definitely known how IUDs work,it is thought that the main effect is to inhibit implantation of a fertilised egg in the wall of the uterus. The device may be inserted at any time during the menstrual cycle but the preferred time is during or just after menstruation. IUDs containing copper need to be replaced every three to five years | |
