Vasectomy. Artwork showing a sagittal section of a male pelvis after a vasectomy was performed. Vasectomy is a minor surgical procedure in which the vas deferens is cut (at centre). The vas deferens is the duct that carries sperm from the testis (purple, lower centre) into the urethral duct of the penis. The cut ends of the vas deferens are tightly closed with ligatures. In this way sperm is not ejected at ejaculation providing a method of contraception that is safe and close to an efficiency of 100%. The operation is done for the vasa deferentia of each testis. The large hollow organ seen at top centre is the bladder with the prostate gland seen below it | |
