Ovarian adhesions. This endoscope view shows adhesions (grey-white strands) between an ovary (white, centre) and other internal structures. Adhesions are bands of scar tissue that form between organs, typically caused by infection, inflammation or surgery. Here, the adhesions are likely to have been caused by endometriosis,a condition where tissue like that lining the uterus is found outside the womb. Endometriotic tissue (grey) can be seen around the ovary. Sometimes adhesions cause pain or dysfunction of the reproductive system,in which case they are removed through keyhole surgery of the abdomen (laparoscopy) | |
