Hydatidiform mole. Gross clinical specimen of grape-like cysts from a hydatidiform mole,an abnormal form of pregnancy. In a complete mole, the mother's genetic material is absent from the fertilised egg. In a partial mole, three sets of chromosomes are present. In both conditions, the genetic imbalance prevents normal development. The membrane surrounding the embryo (the chorion) degenerates, forming a collection of fluid-filled sacs. There is a risk that cells from a complete mole may go on to form a cancer (choriocarcinoma). Hydatidiform mole is most often found in women who are in their early teens or approaching menopause.
