Uterus & ovary infection. Gross specimen of sectioned ovaries and uterus with abscesses caused by opportunistic infection by Actinomyces bacteria. The uterus (at centre) has several large brown abscesses (at lower centre). Abscesses are also seen on the peripheries of the 2 ovaries, particularly at left. Such infection is associated with the use of the Inter-Uterine Device (IUD) contraceptive (pictured at bottom right corner). IUDs are contraceptives which are inserted into the uterus. An IUD can become encrusted with Actinomyces bacteria and may rupture the uterine wall leading to actinomycetoma | |
