Colposcopy of pre-cancerous cervix (CIN 3) iodine stained. Colposcopic view of a severely abnormal,pre-cancerous cervix (at centre). The cervix has been stained with iodine, giving it a brown appearance. Abnormal (dysplastic) cells appear chocolate coloured, around the central canal and have a very high risk of cancerous change. The canal is bleeding abnormally, sloughing off the the abnormal lining as a yellow-green discharge (at centre). This change has been graded in terms of severity and is referred to as CIN (Cervical Intra-epithelial Neoplasia). Grade 1 is mild, grade 2,moderate and grade 3 CIN is severe dysplasia.
