Close-up showing the infected wound on the site where an episiotomy was performed ten days earlier. The area affected (lower centre) is red and inflamed with a yellow discharge; a vaginal discharge is also present. Episiotomy is a surgical procedure in which an incision is made into the perineum,the tissue between the vagina and the anus,to ease the delivery of a baby. The incision may be directed to the side of the anus (as here) or in a direct vertical line with the anus. The incision is repaired shortly after delivery,usually with absorbable sutures; discomfort in the region of the scar may be felt for some weeks
