Ondine's curse. A nurse talks to a young child in hospital with the respiratory condition Ondine's curse. This rare disease prevents the normal breathing reflex from working properly during sleep, due to damage to nerves supplying the lungs or reduced responsiveness of the brain's respiratory centre to carbon dioxide. The child was put on a ventilator every night to maintain breathing. (Ondine's curse is named after the water nymph in French mythology whose human lover was cursed to continuous sleep.) | |
