MODEL RELEASED. Nurse tending a newborn baby on a ventilator in a paediatric intensive care unit. The baby is nine days old. He was delivered by caesarian section, three weeks prematurely, because an ultrasound scan had revealed a distended abdomen. At one day old he underwent explorative surgery & the surgeon found a perforated ileum (the lowest part of the small intestine). Part of the ileum was resected and the baby was given an ileostomy,an operation in which the ileum is brought through the abdominal wall, creating an artifical opening through which the intestines discharge.
