Sperm selection. Technician counting types of human sperm for use in in vitro fertilisation (IVF). She is counting those sperm which are fast- moving (rapides),slow-moving (lents),moving only on the spot (sur place) and totally stationary (immobiles). This is done to gauge the health of a man's sperm. For IVF,only the healthiest sperm are selected. These are then introduced to the egg in a laboratory. If fertilisation is successful, the resulting embryo is implanted directly into the mother's uterus. Sperm can be stored cryogenically to preserve a man's sperm in cases of testicular cancer or other fertility- threatening diseases. Photographed in France | |
