Dental implant. Light micrograph of a cross- section through a titanium metal dental implant. Implants are used to support false teeth (dental prostheses) where teeth have died and been removed. First the implant's base,or post (partly shown at lower left),is surgically embedded into a hole drilled in the jawbone. The outside of the post is "fluffed up" so that new bone will grow into it to provide a strong base for the false tooth. Next an attachment (upper frame) is placed onto this post using a screw (yellow,at lower right). Finally the false tooth will be cemented to this attachment. Interference contrast.
