Tuberculosis treatment. Nurse injecting streptomy- cin into the buttock of a boy with tuberculosis (TB). This anti-TB drug is used in DOTS (directly observed treatment,short-course). In DOTS,all drug doses must be given by or taken in front of a health professional to ensure the course is compl- eted. Tuberculosis is due to the Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacterium, which grows into a primary tubercle (nodular lesion) when inhaled into the lungs. The disease may then spread to the lymph nodes. Tuberculosis is transmitted by coughing or sneezing. Symptoms include fever and weight loss, and the disease can be fatal. Photographed in Navrongo Hospital,Ghana,in 1999 | |
