Chemotherapy in breast cancer. A breast cancer patient holds a container of the anti-cancer drug fluorouracil (5FU),which is being delivered directly into her blood via a Hickman catheter running through a hole in the chest. Both of this woman's breasts have been surgically removed, leaving scars across the chest. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women, affecting 1 woman in 20 in the UK. Treatment includes lumpectomy (removal of the breast tumour),mastectomy (remov- al of the breast),radiotherapy and anti-cancer drugs. The drugs attack the rapidly dividing mal- ignant cells but also cause side-effects like hair loss | |
