Man undergoing radiation treatment (radiotherapy) for Hodgkin's disease,a cancer of the lymphatic tissue. The radiation is directed towards the neck & upper chest area; blocks of lead are placed over the source to direct the beam more accurately. The areas to be irradiated appear as illuminated circles on the patient's body - the disease is characterised by swellings of the lymph nodes in the neck & upper chest area (though other lymph nodes,& liver, spleen & bone marrow may also be involved). Other treatments include surgery & chemotherapy,or combinations of all of these. The disease is curable, especially if detected & treated at an early stage | |
