Prostate cancer pills. Blister packs and box of Cyprostat pills used for treating prostate cancer. Each pill contains 100 milligrams of the anti- androgen drug cyproterone. The prostate is a gland beneath the bladder in men which contributes seminal fluid to the ejaculate. Anti-androgens block the uptake of the male hormone testosterone by the prostate gland. This leads to the death of cancerous cells. The drug is taken with a luteinising hormone-releasing hormone (LH-RH) analogue, which effectively "castrates" the patient. This combination starves the tumour. Side-effects include nausea, decreased libido and the enlargement of one or both breasts | |
