Cosmetic bones for legs. Metal prostheses to be implanted, mainly in legs,to replace bone that is removed for donation to a bone bank. These simple implants are used to replace bone donated from a dead person. This cosmetic measure preserves the appearance of the body for viewing before burial. A hip joint (lower left) and a knee joint (centre) are two of the various bone implants seen here. The removed bone is stored and processed by the bone bank for use in treating bone disease and for bone surgery. Photographed at the bone bank at the Rizzoli Institute,Bologna,Italy | |
