Abscess drainage. Image 2 of 2. Gloved hands of a medical worker use a sterile scalpel to make an incision into an abscess in the armpit of a 16- year old girl. An incision is made after the area is numbed with local anaesthetic. The pus in the abscess is allowed to drain. Abscesses are pus- filled infections surrounded by damaged and inflamed tissue. They can develop in any organ in the body as well as in the soft tissue beneath the skin. Those under the skin are usually red,painful and very tender. The usual cause of abscesses is infection by bacteria of the genus Staphylococcus. See image M551/221 for image of local anaesthetic application
