Blood sampling. Potential blood donor having a drop of blood collected from a pricked finger. The blood is tested for its haemoglobin levels before a donation is accepted. Haemoglobin is the red- coloured pigment in red blood cells that is involved in oxygen transport. Low concentrations of haemoglobin can indicate low body levels of iron, which would indicate that a blood donation could be potentially harmful to the donor. Donor blood is given to patients in transfusions to replace lost blood, for example during surgical procedures or after accidents | |
