Umbilical cord blood. Gloved hand collecting blood from a baby's umbilical cord using a needle. The donated blood will be frozen and stored to provide a source of blood stem cells. These cells can be used to treat diseases such as leukaemia,a cancer that causes the overproduction of abnormal white blood cells. Blood stem cells can specialize into red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. The umbilical cord connects the foetus to the placenta.
