MODEL RELEASED. General practice doctor taking a blood pressure reading using a sphygmomanometer. Blood pressure is measured in units of millimeters of mercury (mm Hg). The reading will show the range from the highest (systolic) to the lowest (diastolic) pressures. An inflatable armband on the patient is used to restrict the blood flow. The pressure is then slowly released and a stethoscope is used to identify the systolic and diastolic points by their characteristic sounds. A normal young adult at rest would have a reading of around 120mm Hg systolic and 80mm Hg diastolic, expressed as 120/80. Abnormalities in blood pressure may point to a variety of conditions.
