Blood samples (lower right) in vacutainers. These samples have been routinely collected during blood donation by volunteer donors. The blood will be screened for blood diseases, such as hepatitis and HIV,and typed to determine the blood group. This is necessary to ensure that blood given to patients in transfusions is clean and of the correct blood group. Transfusions may be necessary when patients have lost blood, for example during surgery or after accidents. Mobile units take all of the necessary equipment for collecting blood to prearranged places, such as shopping precincts and workplaces,so that donors can give blood at their convenience | |
