Equipment used to measure the Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR) of blood. ESR is a measure of the suspension stability of red cells in blood and is regarded as a non-specific index of organic disease. Its value is normally expressed in millimetres and is obtained by measuring the distance from the plasma surface meniscus to the upper limit of the red cell layer in a column of blood that has been allowed to stand for 1 hour. ESR depends on many factors, including relative specific gravity of red cells & plasma and rate at which red cells clump together. ESR is raised in many chronic & acute infections, cancers and some types of arthritis | |
