Pacemakers. Hand holding pacemakers underneath which is a normal electrocardiogram. A pacemaker is a device that supplies electrical impulses to the heart to maintain the heartbeat at a regular rate. The devices shown here are usually implanted under the skin below the collarbone. The pacemaker is then connected to the heart via a wire which is inserted into a major vein in the neck and guided down into the heart. Pacemakers are powered by batteries which, unless the demand is excessive, may operate for several years. Although modern pacemakers are relatively insensitive to radio interference, people bearing them should avoid powerful radio or radar transmitters | |
