Kidney dialysis. Medical staff prepare a woman for kidney dialysis (haemodialysis). During haemodialysis, one tube passes blood out of the patient into an artificial kidney machine (partially seen at upper right) to remove waste products from the blood. The cleansed blood is then returned to the patient through another tube. Haemodialysis is necessary when the kidneys fail to remove waste and excess water from the blood. The procedure may take up to six hours and is usually carried out several times a week. An alternative to dialysis is a kidney transplant | |
