Bio-artificial kidney. Close-up of a prototype filter container of a bio-artificial kidney. A bio-artificial kidney is a device implanted in humans using cultured kidney cells to filter the blood. Here, fluid dynamics are tested by sending green dye through a filter container. The results will enable the filter to be shaped so that it nourishes the cells in it when filtering blood. This is research undertaken by David Humes' team in Ann Arbor,Michigan,USA. Humes founded the company Nephros with the goal of making the first bio-artificial kidney. Although prototype testing has been successful,it is likely to be many years after 1997 before such kidneys are available | |
