Dialysis at home. Close-up of an elderly woman connecting her dialysis fluid to her intra- peritoneal catheter, while operating her home dialysis equipment. The method demonstrated is Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD). The dialysis fluid (bottom left) is connected to the catheter through the green cap and passes into the body cavity. The concentrated body fluid is cleaned of waste products as they selectively pass through the natural body membrane (peritoneum) into the dialysis fluid. The toxic waste is collected in a dialysate bag. The procedure takes about an hour and can be performed during the day or overnight | |
