Bronchoscopy & lavage of patient to assess asthma

| MODEL RELEASED. Bronchial lavage in asthma. A doctor uses an endoscope to collect samples of tissue & fluid from a patient's lungs. The patient has a history of asthma & allergies. In broncho- alveolar lavage,the tip of the endoscope is impacted in a bronchus of the lung. Saline solution is injected and reaspirated. Smears are then made from these bronchial washings (aspirates) for subsequent examination under the microscope to obtain a diagnosis. The device clipped onto the patient's left hand finger is used for non-invasive sampling of blood oxygen. Photographed at the National Heart and Lung Inst- itute,London.
