Breast mammograms. Doctor discussing the breast X- rays (mammograms) seen on the light box behind him with a female patient. Mammography is a means of screening women for breast cancer. A dense, and hence bright, region may indicate the presence of a tumour. Harmless fluid-filled cysts can be distinguished from solid tumours using ultrasound. If the lump is a tumour, then a biopsy (tissue sampling) is necessary to confirm whether it is benign or cancerous (malignant). Cancerous tumours must be surgically removed.
