MODEL RELEASED. Cardiac catheterisation. Surgeons performing a cardiac catheterisation procedure to obtain images of the blood flow in the arteries around the heart. The patient, under a local anaesthetic, has a fine tube (catheter) inserted into an artery in the groin or thigh. The catheter is manoeuvred along blood vessels to the heart. Once the catheter is in place,an dye which is opaque to X-rays is injected to outline the blood flow in the arteries on X-ray film. The results of this procedure are being viewed on the monitor at centre right. The medical staff are wearing shielding under their surgical overalls to protect them from X-rays | |
