Breast mammograms. Series of breast X-rays (mammograms) on a lightbox. Fine details of the soft tissue of each healthy breast can be seen here; tumours typically show up as distinct white lesions. Mammography is a means of screening women for tumours of the breast. Tumours may be benign lumps, cysts,or malignant cancer. Once a tumour has been located on a mammogram, other techniques are employed to identify it. Fluid-filled cysts can be identified by ultrasound. Biopsy (sampling) of the tumour will confirm cancer. Mammography enables breast conditions to be detected early on. Photographed at King's College Hospital,London | |
