MODEL RELEASED. CT scanning. Control room of a CT (Computed Tomography or CAT) scanner whilst a patient is being scanned. On the monitor is a cross-sectional image of the patient's skull produced by the scanner. The patient is lying on a mobile table, and will pass through the circular scanner at upper right. CT scanning involves directing thin beams of X-rays through the patient from the rim of the scanner. The images produced by these beams are combined by a computer to produce cross-sectional "slices" through the body. CT scans produce good contrast between soft tissues and bone, and are useful in diagnosing cancerous tumours and other diseases | |
