MODEL RELEASED. Ultrasound breast scanning with biopsy. Woman has her breast scanned by ultrasound while a tissue biopsy is taken. The biopsy needle is being directed to the tumour site by the trans- ducer held over the breast. An image of breast tissue can be seen on the monitor. Ultrasound employs high-frequency sound waves which gives a two-dimensional image of a scanned tissue "slice". In breast scanning ultrasound is used to distin- guish between solid lumps and fluid-filled cysts. It is a technique usually used once a mammogram (X-ray) of the breast has revealed an abnormality. From the biopsy of the cyst,a tissue sample is obtained for testing | |
