Mechanical vacuum abortion equipment. Curved cannula (flexible tube) attached to an electric vacuum machine (top). This equipment is used to abort unwanted pregnancies between 6 and 12 weeks after the last menstrual period (first trimester). The cannula is inserted into the uterus (womb) through the cervix, which is numbed with local anaesthetic and dilated with a speculum. A tube from the machine is attached to the cannula and the machine turned on. The machine creates a gentle suction that empties the contents of the uterus into a bottle attached to the machine. The procedure usually takes between 10 and 15 minutes and is a safe and effective form of abortion | |
