Electroconvulsive equipment. Device used to administer an electric shock to the brain in electroconvulsive treatment (ECT). The yellow pads are electrodes placed on the temples of the head, through which an electric current is passed. The electric shock induces a seizure or convulsion in the patient. The patient is placed under a general anaesthetic during the procedure. It is used to treat severe cases of depression, occasionally for catatonic schizophrenia and in some forms of mania. ECT usually relieves depression more rapidly than drug treatment, but temporary amnesia is a possible side-effect | |
