MODEL RELEASED. Clubfoot (talipes equinovarus) being treated with splints. The patient is a four-month-old girl. Clubfoot is a birth defect in which one or both feet are twisted out of position. It can range from mild and flexible to severe and rigid. The cause is not known but it may be a result of pressure on the feet of the foetus in the uterus or it may be inherited. Clubfoot can be treated by splinting (seen here) or strapping the affected feet at an early age. In severe cases, the ligaments and tendons in the feet are cut during surgery, followed by immobilisation in a cast | |
