Ingrowing toenail. Close-up of an ingrowing toenail on the toe of a 40 year old woman. The nail is severely deformed, and is growing into the flesh of the toe. Ingrowing toenails are caused by incorrect cutting of the nail,ill-fitting shoes and poor personal hygiene. The flesh the nail presses against becomes painfully inflamed and may also become infected. Treatment is with antibiotic drugs if infection occurs. In severe cases such as this the nail is generally removed under local anaesthesia. The condition tends to recur, and care must be taken when cutting the nail that no sharp edges are left which may pierce the skin | |
