Hammer toe & bunions. Close-up of a 75 year-old woman's foot deformed by a hammer toe and bunions. Hammer toe is usually,as in this case, seen in the second toe where the main toe joint stays bent. A painful corn (of hard, horny skin) has developed on the joint which tends to rub against footwear. A bunion is seen as a deformity (an inflamed joint) at the base of the big toe. A fluid-filled pad has developed (known as a bursa) on this joint, also due to friction. The underlying cause of bunions is hallux valgus, where the joint at the base of the big toe points outwards. Both these conditions can be eased using protective padding or corrected by surgery | |
