Hallux valgus. Inward-turning big toe and overriding second toe on the foot of an 88 year- old woman. This deformity, called hallux valgus,is the result of the joint at the base of the big toe projecting out from the foot and the top of the toe turning inwards. It may be caused by wearing ill-fitting shoes such as pointed high- heels, although the cause may be an inherited weakness in the joint. Pressure of the shoes against the base of the toe can also lead to the formation of a bunion,in which a fluid-filled pad develops over the inflamed toe joint. Surgery may be required in extreme cases | |
