| A newborn baby affected by a congenital dislocation of the hip. In this disorder the ball- like head of the femur (thigh bone) fails to fit into the cup-shaped socket in the pelvis and lies outside. The baby is wearing a Pavlick harness which keeps the head of the femur in the right position. The harness is worn for two to four months and usually helps to correct the problem. If detection of the dislocation is delayed a surgical treatment may be necessary to correct it. The cause of congenital dislocation of the hip is not known and affects about 400 in every 100,000 newborn babies | |
