Hammer toe. Deformity of the second toe in an adult, caused by fixed flexion of the first joint. Hammer toe most commonly affects the second toe which,as here, often develops a corn over the deformity. A corn (clavus) is a painful growth of hard horny skin that can form due to rubbing of the hammer toe deformity against ill-fitting shoes. Hammer toe may itself cause pain. Treatment is by strapping or corrective footwear,or surgery at the affected joint | |
