Third degree burns. Severe scars seen covering most of a young child's body following third degree burns. The child is seen lying on a protective sheet with a feed-tube passing through it's nose. Third degree burns destroy the whole skin layer, including the underlying fatty tissue. Specialist attention is always necessary if the patient survives, and is usually provided by a burns unit. Emergency treatment is followed by isolation nursing (to protect the raw body surface from infection) and skin grafting to cover scars | |
