MODEL RELEASED. Keloid scar on the chest wall of a 29-year-old women. A keloid is a greatly enlarged scar that grows beyond its original boundaries. It can itch, cause pain or be tender to the touch. During the normal healing process,a scar fills with collagen. Eventually, the collagen should break down, leaving a flat, small scar. However, the scar can overfill with collagen, causing it to swell and enlarge, forming a keloid scar. There is little understanding of why this happens and treatment is usually by re- excision and radiotherapy | |
