MODEL RELEASED. Scar on the chest of a 74 year old man six weeks after coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. A heart bypass is an operation in which a blood vessel from elsewhere in the patient's body is attached to the heart to divert blood around a blocked or narrowed coronary (heart) artery. Blocked coronary arteries can lead to angina pectoris (severe chest pain) and a heart attack. Blocked or narrowed arteries are usually caused by atherosclerosis, the deposition on a fatty substance on the arteries' inner walls. This is normally due to a high intake of cholesterol in the diet. The small scar at upper right is due to the insertion of a pacemaker | |
