MODEL RELEASED. Hernia scar on a 54-year-old man's abdomen. A hernia is the protrusion of an organ or tissue out of its normal body cavity. A hernia of the lower abdomen (inguinal hernia) is a protrusion of part of the bowels through a weak part of the abdominal wall. It can be caused by physical straining or an action such as coughing. Hernias are best treated by surgical repair (herniorraphy). A hernioplasty operation involves returning the displaced tissues to their correct place and repairing the abnormal opening.
