Artery removal scar. View of a long scar on the arm of a 53 year old man from the removal of part of his radial artery for use in a coronary artery bypass graft. This operation involves the attachment of extra blood vessels to the heart muscle to compensate for lack of blood flow through the existing coronary arteries. Coronary arteries commonly become blocked with deposits which prevent blood reaching parts of the heart muscle, leading to angina or a heart attack. The removed blood vessel is attached from the aorta (main artery) to an area below the blockage, allowing blood to flow to the deprived muscle by a different route | |
