Pinned broken jaw. Coloured X-ray of the skull (front view) of a 65 year old man, showing a pinned fracture of the lower jawbone (mandible). A chain of metal pins has been surgically fitted and screwed into the jawbone to fix this severe fracture. Injury to the bone can be seen as a deep dark line at the site of the pinning; other fractures in this side of the jaw are also visible. Symptoms of a broken jaw range from tenderness and slight stiffness to loosening of teeth and severely restricted jaw movement. The shape of the jawbone means that a sharp blow that causes a fracture at the site of impact will often cause another on the opposite side of the mouth | |
