Broken arm bone. X-ray of a greenstick fracture of the upper arm bone (humerus) of a 6-year-old boy. The shoulder is at top. The fracture is seen as a protruding discontinuity (centre) to the right of the bone. It is a fracture of the neck of the humerus, which is located just below the ball (upper centre) of the humerus. This ball forms part of the shoulder joint. A greenstick fracture occurs when a sudden force causes the outer side of the bent bone to splinter, instead of causing a fracture that runs right through the bone. The shoulder and arm will be immobilised in a sling,in order to allow the bone to heal. The boy broke his arm whilst skiing | |
