Incisional hernia. View of a bulge in the abdomen of a 52 year old man due to an incisional hernia. A hernia is the protrusion of part of an organ through the wall which should contain it. They can cause severe pain. Incisional hernias arise from a weakness caused by a surgical incision, such as the removal of the appendix (appendicectomy) here, which has led to the intestine protruding through the abdominal wall. The protruding portion may become twisted, cutting off its blood supply and requiring immediate treatment. It is pushed back through the wall surgically, and the weak wall stitched closed. Convalescence may last several months | |
